CHEN

Chen is an artist from San Francisco, California. She is 21 years old and is currently in university, and semi self-employed. She does both traditional and digital art, sometimes they are a mix of both. Portraits is her main format - she says they are “just wacky colorful and incorrect portraits of people [she] may or may not know”.

Instagram is the main platform where she shares her art. Her handle is @flesh.png. Recently, she has also made a website where she sells various artworks (fleshpng.bigcartel.com). She sells prints, posters, zines, stickers and shirts. She prints all of these herself and sends them out to customers.

Chen's inspiration, according to herself, is other artists. She takes inspiration in artworks she admires, and likes to experiment with colors and techniques. Seeing other people’s art makes her want to push herself to make better art and try new things. Chen also claims that she doesn’t put her emotional baggage into her art.

The portraits she draws are all in a rustic ink-and-marker kind of style, with flat colors. The drawing style gives off a messy and experimental feel. Her art is somewhere in the realm between realistic and unrealistic.

This gallery focuses on how emotions can be conveyed through something as “simple” as portraits. Chen's art falls into this category. She creates vibrant and expressive portraits, that stir emotions within the viewer. Her use of warm and cold colors helps bring out the expressiveness of the pieces.
