WELCOME TO THE PORTRAIT GALLERY

The human connection is unlike any other experience on earth.

Our capacity to feel emotions that no other species can is unique to us, and we take them for granted in our daily lives. Occasionally, we resent our emotions, for being too strong and for being too forward, when we should be embracing our capacity to feel. Conveying these emotions by framing them in an elegant and delicate way is one of the most beautiful ways to express a feeling, and we believe that these feelings are meant to be wallowed in, accepted, and loved, with the healthiest way of doing this being through art.

We hope that these artists’ works make you feel.

This gallery features artists Chen, Alessio Albi, Brandon Woelfel, Steve McCurry, Dimitar Hinkov, and Wanjie Li. We curated these pieces into an easily accessible space for all to marvel over, and we hope they inspire you and move you.

The Portrait Gallery is a collection of portraits that are taken through various different artists’ lenses, including categories such as digital art, paintings, and photography. The mission of The Portrait Gallery is to help people visualize the potential power in portrait art. Featured here are many different talented individuals’ works that are very clearly distinctive, yet the center of the Venn diagram is still quite sizable. There is something tying these pieces together, something that makes them flow as one gallery. The common denominator of these art pieces are constant of various hues and tones that work with the composition to express moods and emotions. Each artist conveys and has their own take on the type of mood they account for. In this art gallery, we included emotions from nostalgic to playful to austere. All these different emotions combine to show how different types of people go about expressing these various empowering emotions. Each artist, each portrait tells a story, and the interpretation of each one relies solely on your own imagination.

Since the Portrait Gallery focuses on conveying emotions from the portraits to the audience, the goal is letting the audience feel personally connected to the portrait. Because each portrait tells a particular story, individual viewers will feel differently when looking at each one. Artists in the Portrait Gallery used various techniques on their portraits to convey their emotions. Photographers will use different light setups to switch up the mood. Painters will use unique mediums and techniques to detail the emotion into a subject’s eyes. A common technique, however, are that these artists practice using the complementary color scheme of blues and oranges to manipulate their portraiture toward certain emotions, which gives out either a sense of jubilance or an air of bleakness and melancholy to the audience.

Brandon Woelfel is a freelance portrait photographer and his goal is to capture a nostalgic feel to each one of his photos. He uses a variety of different lighting and his own twist on edits to capture the hues and tones of warm and cool colors.

Ultimately, each artist has a very distinct style within their portraits, yet all these works come together to relay our theme. Through our gallery, emotions are not only conveyed, but also evoked from the audience as they ponder how each portrait is unique from the last, whether it’s through a different hue or presentation of the subjects. Each delicate detail that the artists choose to present through their work only further emphasize the mood of each, highlighting the emotions that their subject is exuding.
